Principal's Welcome

Jennifer KnightWelcome to Earlham Middle School!

On behalf of the middle school staff, we are so excited for you to join us during these three life-changing years! In the middle school years you will grow: socially, physically, emotionally and academically from an elementary school child to a young teen. We will be walking with you helping you, as students and parents/guardians, to navigate these exciting, challenging and amazing years.

Truly, our goal is to team with you to help your child experience success now, and be prepared for the next step, high school. There are three keys to achieving this goal: communication, involvement and support. Never hesitate to reach out to a teacher/advisor with any questions or concerns. Each person may be reached with their first initial, last name and “@ecsdcards.com” such as [email protected] for me, Jennifer Knight, your Secondary Principal.

Our school has Cardinal PRIDE: we Persevere through challenges, are Respectful to peers, adults and ideas, use our iPad to enhance our learning, we Dive into learning and Express Kindness to all. We strive to be supportive to each other and become kind human beings with a curiosity and desire to learn more about who we are, as well as the world around us. Our advisory program (M & M: Mayhem in the Middle) is designed to create smaller, grade level groups with one teacher acting as the advisor for all three years to be the trusted adult for the student and the main contact for parents. We utilize time each day to work on executive functioning skills, social-emotional skills, service learning and to have fun.

Our day is a mix of core content areas of social studies, mathematics, science, English/Language arts and PE/health. Coupled with that, we expose each student to career and technical education opportunities from agriculture to business to human services and more to grow their knowledge of post-secondary options even at this age. We run a block schedule with all classes meeting on Mondays and then four classes on Tuesdays/Thursdays (periods 1-4) and four on Wednesdays/Fridays (period 5-8). Students will be given feedback using our standards-based grading scale throughout the semester. However, our focus is on learning not the grades, and we will use an intervention period each day to work with students by their request, or if they are struggling to demonstrate mastery of a standard, the teacher will invite them to work with them that period.

We welcome your feedback, input and involvement as we strive to be our most effective and supportive of you, the student and your learning and to be teaming with you, the parent to make these three years be amazing!

MAKE it a Great Year!
